Novak Djokovic suffered an injury scare during the United Cup, and the Serbian detailed his injury worries ahead of the 2024 Australian Open.
Whether Djokovic is truly fit remains to be seen, but in general, his wrist seems to be bothering him, but not too much. He's played with minor injuries before and supposedly won last year's event with a pretty big muscle tear.
Did it matter? Not really; he didn't play any differently and was still the most dominant player by far. The landscape is a bit different this year, with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz being bigger threats than last year.
In that sense, Djokovic would want to be fully ready to counter them, and apparently, he is fully ready. He dealt with a minor injury scare at the United Cup with some wrist discomfort but immediately played it down as nothing to be concerned with.
The most recent preparation match against Stefanos Tsitsipas went well, so it seems like it's true. He further confirmed it in the press conference ahead of his first-round match, which he'll play on Sunday, January 14th.
"My wrist is good. I had time from the last match against de Minaur in the United Cup to my first match here to recover. I've been training well. Practice sessions pain-free so far. It's good. It's all looking good. Let's see how it goes."
Being pain-free is about what you could have hoped for from Djokovic ahead of his first match. Practices are not matches, though, and only after he plays his first match or a few of the teams will he truly know whether everything is fine.
It might flare out of nowhere again because that's what happened at the United Cup. We'll see, but whatever happens, don't expect Djokovic to be bothered too much by it, as he's shown before.
