Novak Djokovic has shared his recovery plan for the 2024 Australian Open following his wrist injury, and the world number one is confident that past experience will help his recovery.
In the United Cup quarter-final clash with Alex De Minaur, Djokovic had visible struggles with his wrist as he was brushed aside in a straight-sets loss. Throughout the contest with De Minaur, the world number one received medical treatment on his wrist between changeovers.
Sustaining the injury was certainly a worry for the 10-time Australian Open champion, who will hope to begin his title defense at Melbourne Park in 10 days. However, Djokovic explained post-match that he will focus on routine and recovery in the coming days to get fit for the opening Grand Slam of 2024.
"Well, just trying to recover, first of all, you know, with the wrist and everything I have been struggling with the last couple of days, and yeah, just following the routine of recovery and training and building the form for Australian Open."
In addition, Djokovic believes the previous experience of overcoming injury to win Grand Slam titles will give him the confidence to recover and put in a strong performance.
The 36-year-old even pointed to his two most recent Australian Open title wins, which he achieved after sustaining injuries during the build-up to each tournament.
"The process is not strange to me. It's not unusual. I've been in this kind of situation so many times and I know what I need to do along with my team to get myself ready."
"Of course you never know what can happen. I mean, last two years I've been injured just before Australian Open, and managed to win both Australian Opens and, you know -- sorry, last two out of three years, '21 and '23. So I hope that I will not be injured this time around, you know."
"That's what we're going to work on, to get my body in the right shape, optimal state, so that I can perform at the high level throughout hopefully the entire Australian Open."
