'Disgrace, Umpire Should Be Fired': Kyrgios Enraged By Terrible Umpiring In Estoril

| by Erik Virostko

Nick Kyrgios was enraged by what happened recently at the 2024 Estoril Open, and rightfully so.

Home hero, Nuno Borges, was taking on Cristian Garin from Chile at the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril, Portugal, and it was a proper fight, especially after the Chilean won the first set 6-2.

That wasn't something the Portuguese player or the crowd wanted to see, but Borges managed to fight back nicely in the second set, and after saving a break point in the third game, he had plenty of his own break points in game six, which was by far the longest game of the match.

However, it was also the most controversial game not only of the match, but also of the tournament, and likely of the year as well. With Borges having advantage and a break point, one of the rallies was played.

After Garin hit one of the balls close to the baseline, someone from the crowd shouted "out" to which Borges briefly reacted, seemingly stopping his movement, but without any intervention from the umpire, Christian Rask, the rally continued.

Garin continued and hit his following forehand way wide, and after the rally ended, he immediately proceeded to complain to the umpire about being distracted by the voice that previously came from the crowd.

The Chilean player probably wanted the point to be replayed, which wouldn't be a bad decision, if the umpire would have called a "let" when the noise from the crowd came.

However, he has decided not to do that, and with Garin missing the following shot, the point should have clearly been Borges', the worst case scenario, the umpire could have returned to the previous point and let the rally be replayed, what already would have been a questionable call.

Neither of those happened, as the umpire made a terrible mistake, giving the point to Garin, which didn't make sense because at no point dod Borges lose the point, so there was no way in which it could have been awarded to the Chilean.

Nick Kyrgios seemingly followed what happened on the court, and he was enraged by the situation, like the rest of the tennis community.

"This umpire should be fired and never be able to take place in another match. Disgrace."
