Denis Shapovalov can't catch a break as the Canadian still needs more time to be ready to play, pulling out of the 2023 Citi Open next week.
Denis Shapovalov has had a rather poor season so far, with his tennis not being on the level we've gotten used to from the Canadian. He's a very good player with a lot of talent, but he seemingly can't get things right to start playing on the level we've seen him play in the past.
The Canadian didn't have a lot of luck with injuries either this year, struggling with pain for a long time. He had a rather bleak goal for Roland Garros, admitting that he wants to play without pain which just shows how much it troubled him.
It didn't last long as his Wimbledon run was cut short by an injury as well, the same one that is now keeping him away from playing the ATP 500 event in Washington. The goal for the Canadian is to be ready for the Canadian Open, which begins on August 7th however, a prep before that would have been good.
It's not going to come in Washington as the Canadian withdrew earlier today, putting out a statement a few hours after that. In the statement, Shapovalov confirmed that he's not ready for play yet, wanting to give himself a bit more time to get properly fit.
Hi everyone, my knee needs some more time to heal so unfortunately I won’t be able to play in Washington DC next week. I’ll miss the @mubadalacitidc fans this year but will hopefully see you all on the hard courts soon!
While tennis isn't going that well the Canadian is enjoying life off the court though as he recently got engaged to long-time girlfriend Mirjam Bjorklund.
