De Minaur Stuns Zverev At United Cup To Send Tie Into Mixed Doubles Decider

| by Zachary Wimer

Alexander Zverev was Germany's MVP in previous matches, but today, the German came up a little bit short against Alex de Minaur.

It's been a very interesting run for Germany at the United Cup as they had to pull through a couple of times. Zverev was the absolute MVP delivering some crucial wins like the one over Stefanos Tsitsipas a few days ago.

Kerber on the other hand struggled mostly but pulled through today for her first win as a mother. It was exactly what Germany needed as it gave Zverev the chance to push them into the final with a win. It started well as Zverev won a pretty close opening set.

Neither played did much in that set on the return, but eventually, Zverev got the break chance, and he broke to win it 7-5. Things slightly changed in the second set as neither was as impressive on the serve. We started to see cracks on both sides, but neither found the breakthrough early.

In the second part of the second set, de Minaur got a golden chance, and he took it to take a 5-3 lead. A comfortable hold followed, and we were tied at 1-1. The final set opened with a disaster for Zverev, who was totally out of funk.

De Minaur broke his serve immediately to take a 2-0 lead and that was a huge problem because break chances were pretty rare for Zverev. It ultimately proved costly because the German would not see any until the end of the match as the Australian pulled out a huge win for his country.

The final score was 5-7 6-3 6-4 for the Australian, who will hope that the doubles team pulls out the win for his country. Zverev is likely to play the doubles as well, so stay tuned for that report.
