Daniil Medvedev secures world no. 1 spot for weeks to come

| by Alfredo Bassanelli

Daniil Medvedev is currently world number 1 in the ATP Rankings with quite a significant lead, but that could have changed in upcoming weeks.

The Russian leads the ATP Rankings ahead of Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. And it's especially the German opponent who Daniil Medvedev needed to get ahead of to be sure to keep his world number one spot. And at the 2022 Los Cabos Open, he succeeded in doing so.

Last year, Medvedev triumphed in Toronto and so this year he's defending 1000 points at the ATP 1000 event in Montreal. Therefore, he needed a good result in Los Cabos or Montreal to make sure to keep his leading spot in the rankings.

And now it's sure that he can enter the draw of the Masters tournament without any pressure as he will lead the ATP Rankings for many more weeks without anyone having a real chance to dethrone him.

Alexander Zverev is still injured and so he will not add any points any time soon. Rafael Nadal also withdrew from Montreal as he announced that he struggles with an injury and Novak Djokovic isn't able to enter Canada or the United States and so he will probably also withdraw from the upcoming tournaments.

Therefore, Medvedev has the Masters event in Montreal and maybe also the one in Cincinnati to build event greater lead ahead of his opponents ahead of the 2022 US Open where he defends 2000 points.

One of his main challengers for the no. 1 spot can be Carlos Alcaraz who doesn't have many points to defend and he already showed this season that he's capable of winning on hard courts in the North America.
