Half the 2024 ATP Finals players have been confirmed after Daniil Medvedev booked his spot at the year-end tournament in Turin, Italy.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was the first man to qualify for the ATP Finals after a breakthrough season that included winning the Australian Open and the US Open.
Sinner will hope to go one better on home soil in Turin after reaching the final last year. He lost to Novak Djokovic, who secured a record seventh title at the ATP Finals, moving past his old rival Roger Federer.
Alexander Zverev was the next player to qualify for the year-end event. The German has fond memories of the ATP Finals after winning it in 2018 and 2021. He overcame Djokovic in the 2018 final.
Carlos Alcaraz became the third man to officially make it to Turin shortly afterward. The four-time Grand Slam champion reached the semifinal in his debut appearance at the tournament last year, falling to Djokovic.
Zverev and Alcaraz being set to feature at the ATP Finals could lead to a thrilling battle to decide the No. 2 ranking. The Spaniard retained that position ahead of the Paris Masters after losing in the Vienna Open quarterfinal to Lorenzo Musetti.
When the rankings come out on Monday, Alcaraz will be 315 points ahead of his rival, but the points difference between the pair could significantly change after next week's Paris Masters.
Daniil Medvedev has become the fourth man to guarantee his spot at the 2024 ATP Finals. The 2021 US Open champion is on 4830 points, ahead of the qualification cut of 4490.
This year's Australian Open runner-up is another man with an impressive record at the ATP Finals. He won the title in 2020 after an epic three-set battle against Dominic Thiem, who retired at the Vienna Open.
Medvedev was also the runner-up to Zverev in 2021. Surprisingly, the 28-year-old's last title came on his least favored clay at the Italian Open in May 2023, a long drought for someone of his class.
The 2020 ATP Finals champion's qualification means four places remain undecided for this year's event. One of these spots is very likely to go to Taylor Fritz at No. 5, who is just 190 points below the cut of 4490.
Novak Djokovic is at No. 6 on the list and may have already done enough to secure his spot, but he gave his rivals some hope by withdrawing from the Paris Masters. The 37-year-old may also decide not to play at this year's ATP Finals.
Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Grigor Dimitrov, and Tommy Paul are the other players most in contention for the remaining positions. However, Stefanos Tsitsipas has an outside chance of making it.
A match between Ruud and Medvedev at the ATP Finals would be interesting after the Norwegian slammed players who complain about the balls used at tournaments. That seemed like a pointed dig at Medvedev, who was unhappy with the Shanghai Masters balls.
