Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal made history together yesterday when they emerged as number one and number two in the world.
This week marks the first time since August 7th 2000 that two players from the same nation have been ranked number one and number two on the ATP Ranking. They are Carlos Alcaraz who sits at number one and Rafael Nadal who returned to number two.
Nadal didn't play last week but Casper Ruud did and he didn't defend the full 250 points he won last year in San Diego causing him to drop. It's a truly historic achievement as it also marks the first time that a country other than the United States had two players sitting on top of the rankings.
After winning the US Open a few weeks ago, Alcaraz became the youngest ever to hold the top spot. For the bulk of his career, Nadal has been ranked in the top 10, and the amazing year he has had so far has allowed him to reclaim the top spot. Both already qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin later this year so perhaps we'll see them clash once more after they did so earlier this year in Madrid.
