Boris Becker enjoys the tennis Carlos Alcaraz plays but he warned against putting too much hype into what he's doing.
Carlos Alcaraz is an amazing tennis player who already achieved quite a lot in the tennis world. The Spaniard is a Grand Slam champion, he was number one and is only in the early stages of his career. The hype train is working overtime but Becker was quick to caution against proclaiming him on the level of legendary players such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.
First of all, it’s a very difficult mantle to take over. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic weren’t only tennis heroes, they are sporting heroes. They are cultural icons.
Becker doesn't think tennis will ever be a problem for Alcaraz as he's just the full package in that regard. He does wonder how he'll deal with everything that goes along with all of that because many have flamed up before. He has a humble nature to him which aids but as Becker knows well, everybody makes mistakes.
You talk about the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz as the next hot thing. He’s amazing, he plays great, he looks good and has the full package as a tennis superstar. But there’s a lot more to it than playing tennis. You have to come back, you have to defend your titles, you become a representative of your country and you’re getting into boxes you didn’t think existed before.
Alcaraz is not immune to that and he's already had some difficult choices in his career. Returning quickly to a heavy load in South America gave him a trophy and a final but also an injury that could have been avoided if he ramped up slowly.
We have to be careful. Nobody is perfect and we have to watch that these tennis players are people. And people make mistakes.’
