Ben Shelton will take on Sebastian Korda in the 2023 Shanghai Masters quarter-final, as both players are playing really strong tennis right now.
Daniil Medvedev played against Jannik Sinner in the China Open final last week, and the players who beat them this week in Shanghai will now play against each other.
Sinner was beaten by Ben Shelton in a very competitive match where Sinner had many chances but simply didn't use them. Shelton demonstrated nerves of steel in that one.
Korda took out Medvedev in another good match, showing how well they both played at this event. Both are similar players in the sense that they have a powerful serve and strong baseline play, which is super dangerous in these types of conditions.
Despite both being American and playing on the top flight of tennis, Korda and Shelton actually never played against each other so far on the ATP Tour. It's going to be an interesting matchup because it promises to be a very close one with a lot of highlights.
This is a very interesting matchup between two players who play similarly. The win conditions for both players will be how well they serve because both are almost unplayable when they serve really well. Korda is the better hitter out of the two players having more cleaner shots generally.
Shelton though, can generate a bit more raw power which is useful but his control can be all over the place. Shelton does seem to be a bit more stable mentally because we've seen Korda kind of mess up matches before, while Shelton showed his nerves of steel a couple of times recently.
That bodes well for him if the match ends up being a very close one. Still, I prefer Korda because I do think he's a bit more complete right now.
Prediction: Sebastian Korda to win in two sets.
