Alexander Zverev has officially withdrawn from the 2022 Halle Open after sustaining an ankle injury that is most likely serious in nature.
Only a few days ago, the German likely played his best tennis. He was possibly on track to become the world no. 1, but then disaster struck at the 2022 Roland Garros.
Zverev was battling Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the French Open when he fell down to the floor, screaming in pain, in what seemed like a rolled ankle, but turned out to be an even worse injury.
The tumble Zverev took in Paris a few days ago looked bad, and the initial injury also did. Especially after he was carted off the court for a brief medical checkup. A recent social media post confirmed that the injury was likely serious and that Zverev would miss a prolonged amount of time.
The full extent of the injury is not yet known; however, the German officially withdrew from the 2022 Halle Open, one of his home tournaments that he certainly wanted to play in hopes of preparing for the third Grand Slam of the season.
It probably won't be the only event he withdraws from, and Wimbledon is highly unlikely for him, especially if the injury turns out to be several torn ligaments, as he hinted at in the social media post.
As a result, in a span of a few seconds, Zverev's season could have possibly turned from the best of his life to his worst, as the fact that he has been entering an airplane on crutches recently suggests that he may need more than a few months.
It's very hard to predict at this stage, but it would certainly be good for everyone to see him back on the tennis court as soon as possible.
