Since 2019, Alexander Zverev waited for his first clay-court victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas when he succeeded at the 2022 Madrid Open in their fourth meeting on the red clay.

Entering the second semifinal match at the 2022 Madrid Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas was a slight favourite as he already triumphed at the ATP Masters 1000 event on clay this year, when he also defeated Alexander Zverev on the way to his trophy at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.

However, at the 2022 Madrid Open, the story was much different. Both players held their serves in the first set, after the German broke his opponent and eventually won the first set 6-4. On the contrary, in the second set, it was Tsitsipas who had breakpoints and converted them to win the set 6-3.

In the third set, only one player had breakpoints once again, and this time it was Alexander Zverev. The German had breakpoints in the second, sixth and also eight game of the third set when he succeeded on two occasions to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and set up a final with Carlos Alcaraz.
