Alcaraz Surprisingly Stunned In Miami By Rival Sinner

| by Zachary Wimer

Carlos Alcaraz won't complete the Sunshine Double in 2023 as he lost in the semifinals of the 2023 Miami Open to Jannik Sinner.

The teenage prodigy from Spain seemed to be unstoppable this year, losing only one of the 19 matches that he played prior to the semifinal meeting in Miami. However, with the Italian rival, Alcaraz has a long history in which Sinner managed to beat him already twice.

Both players showcased what they are capable of in the night match at the Hard Rock Stadium, but only one could win and challenge Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Sinner started the match better, breaking the world no. 1 in the fourth game, but he lost the one-break lead in the seventh game. A few games later, Alcaraz led for the first time in the match after he broke the Italian in the eleventh game.

When serving for the set, the Spaniard had one set point, but he couldn't finish the things off. Yet, the tie-break was enough for him to win the first set, winning it 7-4.

But Sinner was determined to fight back. In the second set filled with break points, he was a better player in crucial moments. Alcaraz led 4-3 and had two break points in the eighth game, but the Italian stayed calm under pressure, only to break in the next game and confirm his break with a hold to win the second set 6-4.

The Spaniard apparently lost the momentum going into the third set. He was broken already in the first game, and he almost never got a chance to come back as Sinner held his following to service games to love.

However, in the sixth game, Alcaraz had his only break point of the third set, but after he failed to convert it, Sinner added yet another break to seal the third set, winning the match 6-7(4) 6-4, 6-2 and securing the third victory on the ATP Tour against Alcaraz.
