Coco Gauff lost in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships once again, this time falling to compatriot Emma Navarro.
Navarro has slowly worked her way to become one of the best players in the world, even though she's still flying under the radar. Well, no more, not after this win over Gauff. The reigning US Open champion was hailed as one of the players who could actually win the grass-court major, but she was stopped.
After Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from the tournament and Iga Swiatek lost, the 20-year-old seemed next in line as the likely winner of Wimbledon. Unfortunately for her, she wasn't able to get that far, even though she was the first to break in this match.
Despite taking a 3-2 lead early in the opening set, Gauff lost the break and then also the set 4-6. It was a strange sequence, but it was mostly Gauff's fault because she really couldn't find the court.
There were very few winners and too many errors from the young American, who didn't even serve that well. That was a huge problem because her serve was generally pretty good so far at the event.
The second set didn't offer anything different, as Gauff still struggled. She hit more winners in the second, and Navarro wasn't as sharp as in the first set, but the younger player still missed the ball too much when it matted the most.
She just missed too much and never quite found the rhythm. That resulted in a pretty straightforward straight-sets loss for Gauff, as she lost the match 4-6, 3-6, to exit the tournament in the fourth round once again
Gauff will now pivot to clay now and the Paris Olympics, where she hopes to do better than in London. On the other hand, her compatriot Navarro will enjoy her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final.
