"When I don't care about what people think, it's easier for me to succeed" - Swiatek on expectations

Iga Swiatek is the most dominant player on the WTA Tour and it seems that it won't change in the upcoming months.

Despite her incredible success, world no. 1 tries to avoid any expectations and build her own way to success. Swiatek admitted, that not listening to other people say has been something that worked for her perfectly last year, and that's why she'll keep doing the same thing also in 2023 as she revealed in an interview with BBC.

"When I don't care about what people think and what their expectations of me are, it's easier for me to succeed. That was what I tried my best to do in 2022."

It can be very difficult to surpass or even match what Swiatek achieved in 2022 and therefore, she isn't setting any goals similar to last year's success.

"Although I'm proud of them, I'm not going to try to match my previous achievements because it would not be constructive. A season like that is something amazing and rare. Sure, I would love to do it again but it's not advantageous to live in the past."

After her much success in 2022, the young Pole became recognized all over the world and that's also something that she's just learning how to cope with.

"I do appreciate being recognised and I've found that people are kind to me. Luckily, I can't think of any weird or difficult situations with fans. Of course, there is some hate on the internet, but the rude comments after losing a match happens to nearly every athlete these days. I don't read these comments or messages. That's basically the only downside for now. Right now, I am just cherishing every moment where I can be free and be fully myself. I think we all need that space."
