Naomi Osaka is currently experiencing some issues with her Achilles, and the Japanese star gave an insight into the unique way she has to train due to that problem.
The four-time Grand Slam champion's 2024 season has been challenging. Osaka's results have not been at the level a world-class player like her would expect. For instance, this season, she has yet to win a single title.
Her latest setback was at the French Open. In the opening round, she lost in straight sets to 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova. The American is a former semifinalist at Roland-Garros, but her illustrious opponent was not close to her best throughout the contest.
Osaka also recently dealt with some stress off the court. She was at the Barclays Center in New York, where a stampede occurred. This was due to a sound disturbance that made those present think a shooter was present.
Unfortunately, a post from Osaka confirms some issues with her Achilles. This did not appear to be a problem at the French Open, meaning it is likely a recent complication for Osaka.
In a social media post from Osaka, which can be viewed below, she is running on an underwater treadmill. Although the 24-year-old does not give many details about the extent of her Achilles issue, she says it is still stubborn.
Underwater treadmills have become increasingly common in the training regimens of sports stars. They are typically used to decrease muscle soreness and to make training easier on the players' bodies. Osaka probably feels she is less likely to exacerbate the stubbornness by going underwater.
Hopefully, Osaka's Achilles does not disrupt her grasscourt season. Admittedly, grass is not Osaka's favourite surface, but she still has the powerful game to threaten on any surface. Also, every tournament is better when Osaka is fully fit and competing hard.
