Iga Swiatek finished off her 2023 Roland Garros campaign with a solid performance in the final ending up with another trophy.
Swiatek has been one of the best players in the world for over a year and in that span she's lifted 3 Grand Slam trophies, adding to her initial triumph in 2020. The latest one came a few days ago at Roland Garros when she defeated Karolina Muchova in the final. It was her 3rd Roland Garros trophy and by far the hardest to win.
Hardest to win in many ways. Firstly it was the closest final match, one that she could have easily lost. Secondly, it was only two weeks removed from an injury that her coach admitted was serious enough to almost cost her the event altogether. Thirdly, it was at a time when she is dealing with a lot of pressure following a somewhat shaky season where she failed to live up to previous expectations according to some.
I just feel really proud of myself as these weeks weren’t easy, like in today’s final with a lot of up and downs, but I’m just really happy I could keep my discipline, keep my focus and go for it, and I’m really proud of myself.
Her winning streak was never likely going to be repeated this year but she didn't defend the Indian Wells or Miami. Her talk with Eurosport after the match certainly struck a similar tone to that of her coach.
Like Wiktorowski, Swiatek admitted that it was a tough final, probably the toughest one she played so far in her career. Even so, she held her nerve improving to 4-0 in Grand Slam finals which is impressive in itself.
It was a pretty emotional final. Some finals that I have played they were kind of one way, so in terms of that and handling the pressure and what’s at stake - even though you try not to think about it, it’s at the back of your mind - this was the toughest one.
