Garbine Muguruza recently announced her engagement and the story of how the whole love story unfolded is quite something.
Some people's lives would make a lousy film but every once in and while a person lives a life that would be a pretty good film. The story about how Muguruza met her fiance wouldn't make a long film but rather a great scene in a film. The Spaniard was in New York for the US Open, an event where she never advanced past the 4th round.
Even so, she'll remember the grand slam quite fondly because her boredom during it was the reason she met the man who will likely if all goes well, become her future husband. In an interview with HOLA, Muguruza detailed the chance encounter which would be the start of a great love that will be celebrated with a Spanish wedding next year.
My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk. I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’
Arthur Borges is the name, a Spanish model working in New York at the time, and a fan of Muguruza. He instantly recognized her and knew exactly why she was in town. It was a chance meeting that result in a proper walk in Central Park with things snowballing after that.
While getting to know each other they discovered many things that are similar between them. While playing for Spain, Muguruza was born in Caracas, Venezuela and has one parent from that country. Her other half is Spanish which is similar to him, as he also has mixed origins being part Spanish and part Finnish.
He’s a mix, like me. I’m half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other. We share that feeling of being citizens of the world.
So there you have it folks, being bored is not a bad thing. Just go out for a walk and maybe your life changes forever. As for Muguruza and tennis, she's still on a break and enjoying it very much.
