Aryna Sabalenka was asked for her opinion on the booing that occurred after the Victoria Azarenka's match at Wimbledon.
Before the match, Elina Svitolina declared that she will not shake hands with her opponent. She explained earlier this year why it happens and that it's a mere sign of respect for all those fighting on the frontlines for their country - a war that Belarus technically supports.
Azarenka herself had no issues with it simply giving a nod of approval towards Svitolina after the match but the crowd did. Similar to what the Parisian crowd did, the London crowd booed Azarenka which left a sour taste in her mouth.
Svitolina wasn't a fan of that either calling for the governing bodies to issue a statement urging the fans to stop booing. Sabalenka agrees with Svitolina that it's likely a good idea though Wimbledon already shut down that possibility in a statement.
Yeah, it was great match. It was great level from both. I feel like she just missed a couple of very important points at the end of the third set.
I mean, that's really tough situation. As Elina said, I think someone have to come out on social media with the announcement that there is not going to be handshake so players will not leave court with so much hate.
AELTC director came out on the situation admitting that it's impossible to control the crowd but they're certain the crowd knows what's going on. There is a very high chance that the crowd does know the reasons but boo anyway. Sabalenka still thinks it would be a good idea to put out a statement.
Probably, yeah. I mean, as I said, it would be good for the crowd to actually know what's going on. There is a reason behind no handshake.
