Elena Rybakina was incredibly impressive in her thrashing victory over former WTA World No. 1, Caroline Wozniacki, to reach the second week of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
The two make up for an interesting matchup, all things considered, because there are reasons why both could have won this match. However, the former Wimbledon champion completely outplayed Wozniacki, which doesn't happen often due to how the Danish player plays.
She has good shorts and patience and is very smart, knowing how to use her opponent's strengths against them. Rybakina is certainly susceptible to that approach, but in this match, she was just amazing.
She was hitting the ball as well as ever, finishing the match with 32 more winners than Wozniacki. Obviously, it was clear that the Kazakhstani player would decide most points, but the level she showed was just impressive.
Performances like these certainly catapulted her to the top of the favorites list, especially with Iga Swiatek now out of the event after a shock loss to Yulia Putintseva in the third round.
The first set was too easy for Rybakina because she had 15 more winners than Wozniacki, who simply couldn't challenge her. She was just outpowered in most rallies.
The second set was even more impressive because she served really well. That limited what little chances Wozniacki had, and she basically had none. There's not much she could have done in this match, even after the roof closed, as Rybakina continued her charge, winning the match 6-0, 6-1 in only 57 minutes of play, and she was clearly happy with her performance.
"It feels amazing. The previous match was tough. We played on Court 2 and It was very windy today. Today was perfect conditions for my type of game. I’m Really pleased and I hope the next one I’m gonna play the same way."
