Swiatek Included in Time's List of 100 Most Influential People of 2023

Iga Swiatek has been named as one of just six athletes on Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2023 following a sensational breakthrough in tennis.

The WTA world number one was included in the "innovators" category and the magazine's ranking recognises high-achievers in areas like sports, culture, society and politics. Other global sports stars on the list include the likes of Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi and professional Alpine skier, Mikaela Shiffrin.

In response to Swiatek's inclusion on the list, Shiffrin wrote a short essay for Time on the Polish player's influence in tennis and off the court. The pair have sparked a relationship in recent weeks after Swiatek appeared on Shiffrin's live Instagram feed in April and the American skier shared her admiration for her friend.

"When Iga Swiatek plays tennis, three things come to mind: beauty, power, and truth. Throughout her rise to the top of tennis—and the top of sport—Iga has shown vulnerability and courage. She strives relentlessly to improve her game. She gives credit to those who have supported her, without discounting her own skills and work. She has advocated for mental health and supported Ukrainians in their fight to protect their home. As an athlete, and more importantly as a human, she embodies the kind of confidence that everyone should emulate—the confidence of action over mere talk."

Swiatek was also quick to respond to her achievement as one of the most influential people in the world. The 22-year-old took to her official Twitter channel to express her thanks to Time Magazine for the inclusion and to Shiffrin for her support.

"I have never thought that something like this will happen to me. Thank you @TIME for this incredible honor and recognition. And thank you @MikaelaShiffrin for your words. It means a lot."
