Ajla Tomljanovic has been a pro for a very long time, but it's only now, at 30, that she won the biggest trophy of her career at the WTA 125 tournament in Florianopolis, Brazil.
The Australian player has been a solid pro for a very long time, peaking at world number 32 earlier this year. Despite all of that success and plenty of winning, she never won a WTA trophy.
She played in four WTA International finals but lost all of them. Her biggest trophy to date is the ITF title in Dothan, which she won back in 2013. This one automatically becomes her biggest trophy, even though it's not the WTA 250 level, but WTA 125.
The win comes at a perfect time for Tomljanovic, who only recently returned from injury. This is her fourth event back, and she played really well all week long to find herself in the final.
The final itself was a pretty solid performance as well because she faced world no. 194, Martina Capurro Taborda, who had less experience than her, and it showed.
Tomljanovic won the opening set 6-1 and then followed that one up with a more challenging set, but she still came out on top 7-5. She was the better player for most of the match, dominating her opponent on the second serve of the Argentinian.
She was pretty solid on her own serve, and that proved to be more than enough. It's a good result for Tomljanovic, who had to endure injury heartbreak this year, which makes this win so significant.
She can use it to build her confidence ahead of next year, where she could do some damage. She's finally matured as a player and is still young enough to contest for trophies.
Hopefully, she gets a bit lucky and actually wins the WTA Tour-level trophy. The level is there, but sometimes you need a bit of luck as well.
