Tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva had some minor issues beating experienced WTA veteran Victoria Azarenka at the 2024 Roland Garros, but she won in three sets.
Andreeva had a really solid Roland Garros last year but simply couldn't overcome Coco Gauff. She's playing well this year, as well, as this win over the former world no. 1 proves.
It's not been the type of year many thought she would have, but her performances looked better in Madrid, and she's looked solid ever since. This match was a real battle, and it ended as the last match on Thursday's schedule, taking all the way until 1 a.m. local time on Friday.
An early break in the first set was certainly an ideal start for the 17-year-old, even though she couldn't hold serve early. That's what was amazing in this match. Despite getting broken early a few times, Andreeva held her composure and emerged from the mayhem up 4-2.
She then added a break to finish the first set, winning it 6-3. The second set opened with an early break as well, but much like the first set, the teenager didn't quite hold onto it initially.
Then, she seemingly lost a bit of focus as Azarenka completely turned around the match. The Belarusian won that set 6-3, largely thanks to her good play and Andreeva's inability to find a response.
Azarenka was much sharper in that second set, totaling 15 winners compared to only 7 in the opening set. The final set opened with an early break for Andreeva once more.
But did she hold it? No, she did not. She got broken but broke again to make it 4-3. Did she hold it this time? No, she did not. Yet, she broke again for a 5-4 lead. Still, she didn't hold her serve to win the match.
With her incredible fighting spirit, she broke for a 6-5 lead to serve for the match again, and finally, the third time trying to hold the break proved the charm as Andreeva finally closed it out after two and a half hours., winning the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
