"We had that conversation" - De Minaur on convincing Kyrgios to play for Australia

Recently, Nick Kyrgios revealed his disappointment over feeling undervalued and disregarded by the Australian tennis community.

Kyrgios made a name for himself in 2014 when, at the age of 19, he became the youngest person to win a main-tour championship since 2005. After this outstanding display, he put on a tremendous effort at the 2015 Australian Open, making it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Andy Murray.

Despite his early success, Kyrgios has had trouble gaining the backing and respect of the Australian tennis scene. Recently, he also discussed his feelings after electing to skip the 2022 Davis Cup Finals. Now, his compatriot Alex de Minaur spoke about trying to convince the 2022 Wimbledon finalist.

“We had that conversation. He wasn’t available to play. That’s kind of how it went," de Minaur told the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. “I’m comfortable playing for Australia, which is bigger than anything else."

"I’m looking forward to having all my teammates around and a big group of people supporting each other and having each other’s backs. It’s just going to be an exciting format. Team events bring out the best in people.”
