Winning a Grand Slam tournament is never an easy task, and Holger Rune may experience for the first time in his career how difficult it is to go all the way.
After finishing last season close to the Top 10 and winning his first ATP 1000 title in Paris, Rune soon became one of the biggest favorites to do well at the first Slam of the 2023 season. The young Dane is yet to lose a set in Melbourne, but he already faced an injury scare in his third-round match.
He was taking on Ugo Humbert from France, and at the start of the second set, the teenager was trying to catch a ball and made one unlucky step and twisted his ankle. He then needed a medical timeout, but continued and won the match in three sets. After the match, he spoke about his feeling, but revealed, that it's not only ankle that is bothering him.
"I'm feeling better than I expected. I was a bit worried. My ankle is good but my wrist was hurting a bit, but the doctor checked me and he said it was fine, it's nothing to worry about. Of course it was painful, but I tried to focus on something else. I'm playing on such an amazing stage in the third round of a Grand Slam, so I didn't think about it. I just kept going."
"It was extremely tough, especially after the fall. I played maybe better than expected because I relaxed a lot. But [the] third set was very tough. He was playing super aggressive, serving unbelievable. The tie-break was small margins. I'm happy I kept being brave to finish in three sets."
