Tsitsipas Overcomes Inspired Jarry In Three-Set Thriller To Reach Los Cabos Semifinals

Stefanos Tsitsipas didn’t have the easiest time against Nicolas Jarry in the 2022 Los Cabos Open quarter-final, but he was able to win the match in three sets.

The last time fans got to see Tsitsipas on the tennis courts before this week was at Wimbledon, where he suffered a shocking defeat to Christopher Eubanks. He finally had a good run at Wimbledon but then lost against the American.

His solid form continued this week at the Los Cabos Open, where he so far earned an easy win over John Isner, and this was another solid display. He had far more problems against Jarry, which isn’t a huge surprise.

The courts in Los Cabos don’t really play fast; they’re relatively slow, and as a player who can’t move much at this stage, Isner was no match. Jarry can move a bit better and has some decent shots, which troubled Tsitsipas a bit.

Both served well in this match, which is why the opening two sets ended in a tie-break. Jarry won the first 8-6, but Tsitsipas won the second 7-4, and after that, the Greek was able to control the match well.

Jarry didn’t serve as well in the final set, which made things much easier for Tsitsipas as the Chilean couldn’t really do much in the rallies. As fine of a player as Jarry is, Tsitsipas is a better player from the baseline, and he showed it.

Once his serve stopped delivering, Jarry didn’t have anything to counter, and it’s why the third set ended rather quickly, 6-2. Overall, it was a three-hour match, which shows how much of a fight it was, but that was mostly due to how the courts play—very slow for a hard court.

With the win, Tsitsipas made it through to the quarter-final, hoping to possibly go all the way as he enjoys playing in Mexico. Up next, the top-seeded Greek will play against either the fourth-seeded Borna Coric or the eighth-seeded Ilya Ivashka.
