Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini were supposed to be the first two seeded players at the 2022 Kitzbuhel Open but they both withdrew from the event.
On Sunday, Casper Ruud defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final of the 2022 Swiss Open in Gstaad and they battled for more than 2 and half hours. After reaching the final of the tournament, both players decided to take some time off and skip the 2022 Kitzbuhel Open.
They were both replaced by lucky losers, and in the draw, Albert Ramos-Vinolas was placed on spot no. 1 and received a BYE in the first round. Tallon Griekspoor replaced Matteo Berrettini on line no. 32 and also received a BYE in the first round.
“I think Switzerland is a country with a lot of history now in tennis, winning a lot of Grand Slams with Roger [Federer] and Stan [Wawrinka] the last 18 or 19 years," said Ruud after winning title in Gstaad. "So it’s been an inspiration to everyone around the world, including myself, that they are able to come from a small country, sort of like Norway. Everything about Switzerland reminds me a little bit about Norway.”
“It’s not easy to talk after such a tough loss, but congrats to Casper and his team," said Berrettini at the trophy ceremony. "You’re having an unbelievable season, with the final [at Roland Garros] and winning a lot of matches.”
