Tommy Paul had some bad luck back home during the Sunshine Double, and now he'll miss the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Paul has been playing a lot of tennis lately, and a break will help him, but this is not the type of break he wanted to have. The American played at the Sunshine Double and played pretty well, but he was quite unlucky with the way things went in the United States.
He first rolled his ankle badly at the Indian Wells Open but recovered well enough to play at the Miami Open. He was playing pretty well, actually winning the opening set, but then unfortunately rolled his ankle badly once more, and this time around, he was forced to retire from the match.
We don't really know what's the state of his ankle, but a withdrawal from the Monte-Carlo Masters certainly proves that he's still struggling. His ankle roll in Indian Wells already looked bad, and many were surprised that he had even shown up for the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami.
He showed up and played pretty well, actually, but then rolled the same ankle again, and this time, it might have even been worse. That clearly impacted an already hurt ankle, and it was simply too much to overcome.
Hopefully, this injury won't be too bad, and we can still see him compete soon, but consecutive bad rolls in a short time period are never a good sign, and it might end up being a longer break.
As a result, Paul won't be playing at the Monte-Carlo Masters, as he'll likely prioritize getting ready for the French Open. The Madrid Open is coming up in the not-too-distant future, as well as the Italian Open in Rome after that.
Then, of course, there's Roland Garros and a pretty busy summer after that with grass season, Wimbledon, and the Olympic Games. He was in the running to represent the United States at the event, so hopefully, this injury doesn't prevent him from doing that.
