Jannik Sinner might be a Grand Slam champion now, but the Italian isn't going to rest on his laurels, as there is work to be done.
Sinner has always had a pretty grounded and healthy approach to his career. Despite breaking out as a teenager, it took him a while to really start winning trophies and performing well at the biggest stage.
It never bothered him, nor did he consider it a problem. He simply stuck to what he knew worked: hard work and patience. It finally worked out well for him in Melbourne recently, where he won his maiden Grand Slam trophy.
It didn't change much for him, as he's still looking ahead, remaining grounded in his approach to his career, and he spoke about it in a recent interview with MARCA, in which he also opened up about his goal for this season.
"There are three Grand Slam tournaments left and I would like to do better than last year. At Wimbledon, I made the semi-finals and it won't be easy to improve."
"At Roland Garros, I reached the second round and at the US Open, I reached the fourth round. One of the goals is to do better in those tournaments."
Those are certainly healthy goals for Sinner, and he isn't jumping ahead to winning the event. He knows he first needs to improve to find consistency at all major events. That's a really good way to look at things, and clearly, it worked out really well for him so far.
Another goal for him is to improve physically. Although it's been somewhat of a problem in the past, he's now stronger than he's ever been, and he's hopeful that it will show in his results. Therefore, he doesn't want to look ahead at the world no. 1 spot, but take it one step at a time.
"When you are better physically and mentally it is easier. There are important tournaments like Indian Wells, Miami, the clay-court tour... I am now four and to be number one I have to go through three and two. I go step by step. Hopefully this year I can go up one more step."
