Jannik Sinner struggled through the first few matches at the 2023 China Open but finished spectacularly to win the ATP 500 trophy.
This was a really strange week for Jannik Sinner, who struggled in the first few rounds, even injuring his ankle. The latter part of his week was incredible, though, as he produced a sensational effort to beat Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal.
He then produced an even better effort in the final to take down an in-form Medvedev, who had just played a perfect match against Zverev in the previous round. Daniil Medvedev saw the script flip on him in this one because, despite a solid overall effort, he still lost to Sinner, who was incredible.
The match was an incredibly close one because both were amazing on their respective serves. Medvedev was hitting it a very high percentage which allowed him to dominate easily while Sinner followed it up with amazing play from the baseline.
Neither player dropped their serve in the opening set so we ended up in a tiebreak and it was Sinner who dominated to take it 7-2. It was a huge problem for the Russian because he played about as well as he could and it still wasn't enough.
That showed up in the second set as Medvedev's play regressed a bit, which wasn't a surprise, but Sinner was even better. The Italian barely dropped any points on his serve in the second set, so when we ended up in the tiebreak, it was only one way it could go.
And it went the Italian's way as he once again outplayed Medvedev easily to complete the week. Incredible back-to-back performances by Sinner, who had 29 winners in this 7-6(2) 7-6(2) win over Medvedev. He will be in Turin later this year at the ATP Finals, and Italian fans are loving it.
