Diego Schwartzman is out of the 2024 Roland Garros in the second round of the qualifying after losing to Quentin Halys.
This year's Roland Garros is the final one for a few notable tennis names. It's the last French Open for Dominic Thiem as the Austrian bid farewell to the event by losing his second-round qualifying match.
Schwartzman is another player for whom this is the final Roland Garros in his career, and he, too, was beaten in the second round of the qualifiers. Both of them have had notable results in the French capital, more so for Thiem, so it's sad seeing them leave their final event in what is essentially not even the main draw.
Both of them at least had fans paying tribute to them by packing the stands. The match was a decent one for the Argentinian player, as he actually took the opening set 6-4 against a pretty solid player who was playing on home soil.
It's not a secret that French players play amazing tennis in Paris and France generally, but Schwartzman still proved better in the first set. He was just amazing in that set, outplaying his opponent mostly from the baseline, as he hit 15 winners.
The second set was not quite as sharp from the Argentinian player, as Halys was a lot better. He served better and actually totaled 15 winners himself in that set to win it 6-4.
The final set was very competitive, but Halys always seemed to be a step ahead. He broke first, and it seemed like it would be enough, but ultimately, it wasn't as Schwartzman was able to force a tie-break.
It was a first-to-ten tiebreak in the final set of the qualifying match, and Halys got to the finish line first, carried by the crowd. He played better down the stretch to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) and eliminate Schwartzman in his last-ever Roland Garros.
