Holger Rune will be playing already in the semifinals of the 2023 Montpellier Open, after he defeated Gregoire Barrere.

In the second round, the young Dane defeated Marc-Andrea Huesler, and he wanted to follow up on a good performance also in the quarterfinals against a home player, who was cheered on by the crowd in Montpellier.

The match started well for Barrere as he was the first player to break. The Frenchman led 4-1 in the first set, but he couldn't keep things even as Rune broke back to make it 4-4.

Then, both players held their serve quite comfortably, and so the first set had to be decided in a tie-break. World no. 9 did good job on return, breaking his opponent four times out of five points, and that was enough to secure 7-2 win in the tie-break.

Barrere had chances to break first again in the second set. But this time, he didn't use his chances and so a tie-break had to be played once again in Montpellier.

This time, both players had their chances, but once again, Rune proved to be too good to win the match 7-6(2), 7-6(5) in an hour and 54 minutes to reach semifinals at the 2023 Montpellier Open. He will await winner of the match between the third-seeded Borna Coric and Maxime Cressy.
