Rafael Nadal has officially launched his latest charity project - the Rafael Nadal Foundation - in Madrid, which will provide children with sports access and social and psychological support.
Nadal recently returned to the Spanish capital ahead of the 2022 Madrid Open, which begins on May 2. The 21-time Grand Slam champion's presence was immediately clear after he drew huge crowds whilst on the practice courts as he prepared for his first outing since Indian Wells in March.
But the former world number one wasn't just in Madrid to participate in the Madrid Open; he also opened his Rafael Nadal Foundation. Nadal spoke about his new foundation and his hopes for how sports and other services can help local children improve their lives.
"Today has been an intense day but at the same time fantastic. Happy to inaugurate the new Rafa Nadal Foundation Center in Madrid in the San Fermín neighborhood, where we will serve minors in vulnerable situations through sports, educational activities and psychosocial support."
Just before launching the Rafael Nadal Foundation, the Spanish player also opened another center for educating young people. In addition, the 36-year-old officially opened his academy in Mallorca as the Spaniard started the UAX Rafa Nadal Sports University earlier in 2022.
Despite having several educational and social enterprises outside of his tennis career, Rafa couldn't hold back his joy in launching his latest project. In particular, the former world number one praised partner and Spanish electricity company ENDESA for their support in getting the organization up and running in the city.
"Thank you Endesa for being our ally in this project and thanks to all of you who have made it a reality. Very happy to say that the Rafael Nadal Foundation continues to advance in its intervention, with firm and sure steps, with commitment, rigor and professionalism."
