Nick Kyrgios had an amazing 2022 season, and he was recognized for it at the 2022 ACT Tennis Awards by being named Australia’s Tennis Player of the Year.
Kyrgios is a supremely talented tennis player who has shown his talent early on in his tennis career. What wasn’t there in the past was the commitment to the sport that is ultimately needed.
It doesn’t matter how talented a player is; that player needs to work hard on their craft if they want to be one of the best players in the world. Kyrgios, for much of his career, didn’t come close to that, to the dismay of many, most notably John McEnroe.
He did, however, take things quite seriously in 2022 and delivered what might be the best tennis season of his life. He had lots of great results this year, most notably making the Wimbledon Championships final.
After three years, the 27-year-old Australian lifted another ATP title, and this year, Kyrgios won already 35 matches and is only one match away from equalling the number of matches he won throughout the last three seasons combined.
He also had good runs at the Australian Open, where he won a trophy with doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. He did well at the US Open as well, beating Daniil Medvedev before being beaten by Karen Khachanov in a stunning upset.
It was simply the first time in his career that Kyrgios took things seriously, and the results on the court show it. He was absolutely amazing for much of the year, which was enough for him to be recognised back home in Australia.
He was named Australia’s Player of the Year for 2022 at the ACT Tennis Awards. Fans are hoping that Kyrgios will be able to continue in the future because he is a wonderful player when he really tries.
The 2022 Tennis ACT Awards recognized many players, such as the best junior male athlete - Charlie Camus, and the best junior female athlete - Wambui Taylor.
