Rafael Nadal is one of the most successful players in Spain's Davis Cup history, and so it's not a surprise that he would like a proper farewell on the court with the team.
During his career, Nadal lost only one singles match when representing Spain at the Davis Cup. That loss came in his first-ever match for Spain when only 17-year-old Nadal took on Jiri Novak from the Czech Republic and lost 6-7, 3-6, 6-7.
Since then, the 22-time Grand Slam champion has held a 29-match winning streak, and he would like to extend it by at least one more match.
"Regarding Davis, I am aware that I have few options left, but in my ideal world I would like to play one last time and say goodbye. But there is a calendar and I don't know what will happen," he said in a recent interview with Cadena SER.
"The fact of playing in Spain, with a very complete team, is extra motivation. But the motivation to play for your country has always been maximum. But the years go by."
Recently, the Spanish Davis Cup team went through a captaincy change after they lost in the opening tie at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals. Sergi Bruguera was replaced by David Ferrer, who retired from the sport only in 2019. Speaking about the change, the 22-time Grand Slam champion said:
"First of all, we must thank Sergi Bruguera, he has led us to great results. Now comes another era with David. We have shared a lot," he said.
