Last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev continues a rather lacklustre season with an early exit to Alex de Minaur in the second round of the Paris Masters.
Due to a string of poor losses that began earlier in the year when Medvedev blew a 2-0 lead against Nadal in the Australian Open final, the Russian is not having a great tennis season. He discussed how that defeat damaged his confidence, and today he failed to maintain his composure when he needed to.
A double fault to end the match, a smashed racquet and some booes is certainly not how he wants to remember this event but that's how it concluded. He did compliment de Minaur after the match: “De Minaur played very well. He didn’t miss much. He did the right choice many times. I had my chances, didn’t use them. So credit to him."
Asked about him venting a few times Medvedev responded: “I was not at all talking to the umpire about the crowd. In my opinion, the crowd was nice, supporting both players, 50/50, always nice. In my opinion, the umpire didn’t do a good match, but I’m not criticising.
“It’s like, he did a bad match like I can do a bad match, for example" continued Medvedev. "At the end my attitude was not good enough. I can admit it. But in my opinion, he didn’t make a good match. I like [chair umpire] Nacho [Forcadell], and I like him as an umpire. I’m talking only about today.”
