Daniil Medvedev has recently made headlines once again, but this time, not for his stunning victory at the 2023 Dubai Championship.
Instead, it was his sly dig at fellow ATP player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, that caught the attention of tennis fans worldwide. During the presentation ceremony after his triumph in Dubai, Medvedev took the opportunity to bash Tsitsipas for his previous comments about his friend and compatriot, Andrey Rublev.
The former World No. 1's comments were a clear reference to Tsitsipas' statement in the past, where he claimed that Rublev only had a few weapons in his arsenal.
Medvedev's statement was subtle, but it was undoubtedly a direct hit at Tsitsipas, with whom he has had numerous feuds in the past. It seems that their rivalry is far from over, and Medvedev's recent victory has only reignited the fire.
"I just want to say that I remember not long ago, one player said that he has just a few weapons, and I was reading this and I was like, ‘How can you say this?’"
While both players have immense talent on the court, it is their off-court antics that have been grabbing the headlines in recent times. Tennis fans are eagerly waiting to see if Tsitsipas will respond to Medvedev's latest dig or if the two players will continue their feud in the upcoming tournaments.
Defending his compatriot and hoping that he will defend the Greek next time they meet, Medvedev added:
"Andrey is one of the most skilful players on the tour, he just didn’t exploit fully his potential but I’m sure that he can win Grand Slams. Hopefully he can beat this guy, who said it, many, many times, and I wish this for sure."
