Daniil Medvedev finally booked a quarter-final in London advancing to that stage of the 2023 Wimbledon following the retirement of Jiri Lehecka.
It's the day of retirements in London as we've seen two already. A rather packed schedule is progressing quickly which will make those that are set to play later today very happy as they will likely avoid the curfew suspension that forced Djokovic to play today as well as last night.
Elena Rybakina was the first beneficiary of a retirement today as Beatriz Haddad Maia sent her to the quarter-finals. Rybakina would have probably won that match regardless but she only had to play four games to progress. Daniil Medvedev is now the second as the Russian is through to his maiden quarter-final after Lehecka retired.
Much like in the first match, Lehecka called for an early medical timeout which signalled to everybody that he was really struggling with something. If it wasn't clear from that then it could have been easily spottable from his level. It wasn't a particularly strong one from Lehecka, certainly not like the one in previous days.
Medvedev took the opening set 6-4 behind a really solid serving performance. He had 5 aces along with 10 winners dominating in the rallies behind his first serve. Lehecka played his typical aggressive play but it didn't work out that well as he had too many errors.
The Czech player opted to continue the match after the medical timeout trying a few things but nothing worked as he clearly wasn't in playing condition. He tried to shorten the points by being very aggressive but it resulted in 19 unforced errors in 8 games of play and that's too much.
After falling behind 0-2 in sets, the Czech player opted to retire. Medvedev will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Christopher Eubanks in the next round.
