Kei Nishikori details battle with depression due to injuries

Kei Nishikori battled depression due to his inability to stay healthy with injury concerns following him for the majority of his career.

Over the course of his career, Nishikori sustained a variety of injuries, and he has never fully shed the reputation of being prone to them. He has been out since the beginning of the year due to a number of injuries, and he is still unsure of his return date because of recent pain during practice.

"I was really depressed, even thought about retirement," said Nishikori in a recent interview.

"From July to September I was in rehab at home for 3 months, was not able to hit on the court, that was tough mentally. Seeing Roger I finally came to think I can do it until late 30's. I was in the brink (of retirement), added Nishikori.

Nishikori hopes to be ready for the US Open but he can't confirm whether he'll body let him as he explained it with '50-50':

"I'm not sure when I will be back, I have not hit balls for the last month (due to ankle injury), aiming to play the AO, but it's a 50-50 chance"
