"If prize money at Wimbledon is decreased, I'd rather go on holiday" admits Fognini

The 2022 Wimbledon will take part without awarding points to the players and many expect the event to lose on its quality as Fabio Fognini also hinted that he might not participate.

British no. 1, Cameron Norrie previously hinted that many top players can skip the 2022 Wimbledon as a result of playing without points. It looks like he might have been right as Italian no. 4, Fabio Fognini said that if the prize money at the tournament decreases, he might not participate at the event this year. The 34-years-old Italian of course isn't capable of playing as many tournaments as he used to before, so he would also appreciate some rest during the season.

"I heard prize money will be decreased at Wimbledon. If it happens, I'd rather go on holiday in Formentera," said Fabio Fognini. It still remains a question how many players will take part at the event and if despite the points strip and possible prize money decrease, we'll see the best of the best in All England Club as we usually see. Cameron Norrie doesn't think that will be the case, as he said:

“Obviously it’s an extremely difficult situation with everything going on with the war, but for me it’s tough,” Norrie said. “Having a home slam and not having to gain any ranking points from that and the tradition of it."

"You’re not really playing for anything, you’re playing this almost like an exhibition so for me it was tough to see that and obviously it’s a really tricky situation but I would have liked to see it still have points, still have something on the line.”

“Wimbledon is still such a special event. But I think you’ll see a lot of top players not playing, just resting and getting ready for the hard-court events. Making sure that they’re ready for those. Especially those that don’t worry too much about the money. So I could see a few top players not playing because of that.”
