John Isner will play his final career event at the US Open, and he spoke about the hate players get on social media ahead of it.
Isner will bid farewell to tennis at the US Open. He will play one final career event, and the veteran reflected on various topics in the press conference ahead of the event. One of those topics was the hate players get on social media. Isner reflected on the fact that much of it comes from betting and people losing money. He feels sorry for them.
You just really have to feel sorry for them. Most of the time it's people that have lost money on you. I kind of chuckle at it. If I choked and they lost money on me, it kind of makes me smile a little bit.
That's social media. Obviously we know it does amazing things for the world, but there's a flip side to it, as well. I think if people just can get face to face with different points of view, most people are civil.
It's not something he will have to think about for much longer, as this will be his final event. His best advice would be to just ignore it though he, like many of his colleagues, is stunned by the things some people end up saying.
Well, yeah, probably just ignore the hate as much as you can. Us professional tennis players, we get it. In an individual sport, we get it after every single match we play. It's really kind of crazy the stuff people can say.
He will face Facundo Diaz Acosta in the first round, an interesting player who hasn't played many matches on hard courts so far. It's certainly a match Isner could win, and that's the hope. Win at least one more match at the US Open, his home slam.
