Carlos Alcaraz has replied to Andy Roddick's remarks about his serve in an interview that he partook in.
The Spaniard is the No. 1 seed at the 2024 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires this week. Alcaraz has also explained his unusual scheduling decision ahead of the Argentina Open, with many top players not electing to compete on the South American clay courts.
This will be Alcaraz's first match since the Australian Open. During that time, 2003 US Open champion Roddick made comments about Alcaraz's serve, which caused a strong response among many tennis fans.
The former world No.1 felt that the serve was the one part of Alcaraz's game that has not improved since his incredible rise, and that it is the area of his game with the most scope to get better in the coming years.
However, the American did clarify that he was not suggesting that Alcaraz get a new coach. Roddick defended his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, from fans on social media who were making this argument.
Alcaraz has now responded to what Roddick said. The two-time Grand Slam champion gave a positive outlook on his serve, although he knows further improvements can be made.
"I feel that the serve is something I have improved a lot, but I have to continue improving. And then I want to work in certain situations."
Last year's Wimbledon champion then elaborated slightly more about needing to improve and how confident he is feeling about being able to do that in the coming years.
"I repeat, I have improved a lot but I actually have to continue improving and still I have a lot to do. The reality is that I feel very confident, with a good level, I come from playing well in Australia. I had good training on clay and physically I am very well, at a very high level of tennis."
