Novak Djokovic had an incredible active winning streak in Australia before his match at the 2024 United Cup, where Alex de Minaur ended it.
Djokovic's dominance in Australia is quite well known as no other player has ever dominated at the Australian Open as much as Djokovic. 2023 saw him lift the 10th Australian Open trophy, the most out of any players, which shows you how well he's been playing there.
He generally doesn't play much outside of the Australian Open but occasionally will play an event in preparation for it. This year he opted to play at the United Cup and did well in his first match despite an injury scare with his wrist.
He played it down after the match but acknowledged a problem. It clearly impacted him against de Minaur as he couldn't exert the typical pressure during rallies, which, combined with de Minaur's strong play, was enough to beat him 6-4 6-4.
It's the first time he lost on Australian soil since 2018 when Hyeon Chung beat him at the Australian Open. Since then, Djokovic has played 43 matches and won all of them. Many of them were at the Australian Open, where his winning streak is still going strong.
He went 7-0 in Australia in 2019, 13-0 in 2020, 9-0 in 2021, got deported in 2022, and 12-0 in 2023. Combined with wins over Zhizhen Zhang and Jiri Lehecka, that was 43 won matches in a row. The streak in Melbourne is still going strong and is at 28 matches in a row.
Let's see if that iconic streak at the event ends because it's been that kind of trend. He lost his Wimbledon Centre Court streak last year to Carlos Alcaraz and there is a pretty good chance that this one will be broken as well.
Especially if the wrist keeps bothering him. Stick with us and find out in the coming weeks.
