One thing that you won't see often is Holger Rune without a hat, yet that's what fans got to see at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Desperate times call for drastic measures, it seems, as Holger Rune ditched his signature hat for some hat-ess tennis at the Swiss Indoors. After losing the majority of matches played in recent months, the Dane opted for a new approach.
It was very much needed because his lone win in the past three months came in Bejing at the China Open against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Stockholm didn't go well as he lost to Kecmanovic, and it wasn't going that well in Basel either.
He lost the first set against Kecmanovic, and during the second set, the youngster opted to take off his hat. It was a glorious move as his tennis literally started to blossom after that.
He turned around that match and kept the setup for his next match against Sebastian Baez, which was a win again. This time around, reporter finally asked Rune whether superstitions had something to do with him ditching the hat, and he answered.
The 20-year-old admitted that was just sweating too much because of the heat in Basel arena, but also joked about a little superstition.
It's a good question. It's very...for those that don't know, it's really hot in this arena. So yesterday after the first set, I was sweating a lot and had to control it all the time so why not? Let's play without and see what happens. It's not that I'm superstitious, but it's working pretty well. It's good to get some air for the hair if you wanna have hair at 50 so yeah, I'm enjoying myself.
If you ever wondered why Federer is so ice cold during big moments, now you know why. It's bloody cold in Basel, and that's why Rune took off his hat. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?
