Holger Rune hasn't had a lot of success lately, but he hopes to finish the year strongly with a series of indoor events.
Rune made his Top 10 debut after a series of spectacular indoor performances that started at the Stockholm Open last year. He won that event and then made a good run in Basel, making it to the final and finishing off with a Paris Masters run.
He bested Novak Djokovic in the Paris final to win his maiden ATP 1000 trophy, which allowed him to break into the Top 10. It was a furious finish to the season, and he's hoping for something like that again.
However, the most recent performances of the young Dane will make it difficult for him to defend those points. His first Shanghai Masters participation went badly as he was beaten by Brandon Nakashima 6-0 6-2.
That was his worst defeat of the year, and it certainly doesn't look good. He's 1-9 in his last ten matches and in desperate need of some wins to build up his confidence.
Confidence is what is missing for Rune as he says he's healthy, but his approach to tennis lacks the bravery that he usually displays. He's very timid, and opponents punish him for it.
Maybe the indoor season will once again prove good for him. He's certainly excited about it, sharing a series of Instagram stories and confirming his schedule for the upcoming weeks, which will be the same as last year.
It was his way of confirming what his upcoming schedule will be, and as expected, it's the Stockholm Open where he defends his trophy. It's also the Swiss Indoors in Basel and, finally, the Paris Masters.
The hope is for a strong finish to secure a spot in the ATP Finals, which he missed narrowly last year, so let's see whether he gets it done. He'll need to play far better than he did recently.
