Dominic Thiem is one of the most successful tennis players of his generation, but his career will likely come to an end in 2024.
The Austrian had a really successful tennis career, and all of that came during the period when the Big Three were all competing for Grand Slams. His career highlight undoubtedly came in 2020, when he managed to win the US Open.
It's his only major, but it's far from being his only success on the ATP Tour. Over the years, he played many significant finals, but he was just unlucky about having to play against the best all the time, losing to Rafael Nadal in the 2018 and 2019 French Open finals, and to Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open final.
Those are the tournaments where these two legends have been the most dominant in their careers. He also played twice in the final of the ATP Finals, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev, and reached the world no. 3 spot in the ATP Rankings.
However, after his career has been derailed by a wrist injury in 2021, he seemingly never returned to where it was before. Over the past two seasons, he had occasional good runs, but despite trying to recover his ranking, at the moment, he's still ranked only 117th in the world.
He even lost to two players ranked outside of the Top 200 in his recent appearances in ATP Challengers tournaments, and he hinted earlier this season that if he doesn't start winning again, he may consider retiring.
According to Salzburger Nachrichten, that should happen later this year. The publication suggests that Thiem already likely made the decision, and his retirement should come at the 2024 Vienna Open, which is his home tournament.
The Vienna Open is one of the last tournaments in the calendar, and this year, it will be played from October 21st to 27th.
