Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev: 2024 Australian Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Zachary Wimer

Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev both reached the 2024 Australian Open quarterfinal, but only one can advance; who will it be?

The Spaniard has been playing really strong tennis so far in Melbourne, as he made it the second week there for the first time in his career. Things are not getting easier as he's about to face Zverev, who has beaten him at a Grand Slam before.

The German has also been playing pretty strong tennis for a while in Australia, but he's also shown himself to be quite vulnerable. Cameron Norrie took him to 5 sets, as did Lukas Klein, and when you add the amount of tennis he played in the United Cup, he's racking up a lot of time on the court.

We'll see whether that hurts him, but with a super-aggressive player like Alcaraz coming in, it certainly promises to be anything but smooth sailing.

Head-to-head:

Alcaraz and Zverev played quite a few matches so far with the German actually leading the H2H 4-3. He won the most recent match at the ATP Finals in Turin, but Alcaraz, for example, won the match before that, which was played at the US Open.

It was a straight-sets win, so clearly, the best of the 20-year-old topples Zverev, especially in faster conditions. Indoors, Zverev has the serve to fall back on, but if Alcaraz finds a way to bypass that, then he has a clear advantage in the rallies.

Carlos Alcaraz Alexander Zverev

2 Rank 6
20 Age 26
4-0 2024 W/L 8-1
159-43 Career W/L 402-173

Prediction:

Another thing we have to mention is fitness. Alcaraz won most of his matches in straight sets, spending about nine hours on the court so far. Zverev, on the other hand, spent 14 hours on the court so far, with two of his matches going to five sets.

The most recent win was a four-hour match, so there will be some fatigue there. If Alcaraz comes out strongly, then he'll likely cruise.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
