Carlos Alcaraz continues to endear himself to fans and players across the tennis community, after revealing the meaning behind an eye-catching post-win celebration at the Paris Masters.
Making two circles in front of his eyes for the classic 'spectacles' celebration pose, the young Spaniard caused quite a stir on social media as eagle-eyed viewers were left bemused at its meaning.
However, as has so far been the case with the new World No. 1, there was nothing controversial behind the gesture. Alcaraz responded to the general bemusement on social media by explaining that his celebration was a nod towards a group of friends who support him, named 'Team Lupas' (glasses in Spanish).
The prodigious Spanish talent made the gesture after his second round victory over Grigor Dimitrov yesterday. In an impressive display, Alcaraz overcame an in-form Dimitrov 6-1 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the final Masters of the year for the first time.
In the last eight, he will meet another Bercy quarter-final debutant in the form of Holger Rune. The young Dane is in a rich vein of form himself, having taken the title in Stockholm two weeks ago. He advanced with straight set wins over No. 10 seed Hubert Hurkacz, and Andrey Rublev.
Alcaraz and Rune know each other well and played doubles together as juniors. They have met only once before, almost exactly this time last year at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan with Alcaraz coming out on top on that occasion. Their quarter-final encounter in Paris should be another early showcase of a rivalry that will hopefully endure down the years.
While all eyes will be on what should a fantastic display of tennis, expect many viewers to keep a keen eye on Carlos Alcaraz's post-match celebrations should he win. It wouldn't be a surprise if they stole the show once again.
