Matteo Berrettini is only the second player to book his spot in the fourth round at the 2022 US Open after defeating Andy Murray.
The first player that did so was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who defeated Daniel Galan Riveros in four sets and the Spaniard will be the next opponent of Matteo Berrettini who spent three hours and 47 minutes on court to beat former world number 1, Andy Murray also in four sets.
The Italian was the first player to have a break point in the match, but after he didn't use his chance, it was a three-time Grand Slam champion who also got his chance. But Murray also failed to break his opponent and in the very next game, it was last year's Wimbledon finalist who got the first break of the match and later finished off the first set by winning it 6-4.
In the second set, the Scot was broken already in the first game and it seemed that his opponent will easily take also the second set. But he fought back and earned the break already in the second game. However, in the closing stages of the set, Berrettini proved to be too good for the 2012 US Open champion and won also the second set 6-4.
The young Italian had 8 chances to break his opponent also in the third set and finish the match quickly. Yet, Murray showed his experience, kept his cool when facing all of the break points and eventually, he won the set in a tie-break to force the fourth set.
Former world number 1 started also the fourth set well as he took his opponent's serve in the first game and it seemed that the first match of the day on the Arthur Ashe Stadium will go into five sets.
But Berrettini was against that, he got two breaks and after three hours and 47 minutes won the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3 to win his third match against Murray.
