The ATP and WTA elected to respond to the Wimbledon ban of Russian and Belarussian players by stripping the event of its points.
While applauded by many the decision creates a string of problems for players that have nothing to do with that. Novak Djokovic will lose his number one ranking even if he wins Roland Garros and Wimbledon despite having nothing to do with it. The Serbian famously spoke out against such a measure recently. Matteo Berrettini is another player that will lose 1200 ranking points and drop out of the top 10.
For other players, it will create even more problems. Marton Fucsovics had a really good run last year at Wimbledon and he blasted the organization on Instagram in a story writing:
"No rankings points in Wimbledon and points will drop from 2021. No chance to defend them. Are you serious ATP Tour. From 60 I will drop to 130. Thank you."
It's a troublesome thing because it will force Fucsovics to play qualifiers in some events where he would be able to play by entering the main draw. There is no way for him to make up all of those points even if he opted to play some challengers instead. ATP can always blame Wimbledon for starting this but it's clear that did not consider all the implications, at least not for the lesser ranked players.
It's a common complaint Djokovic wanted to address with his PTPA initiative. The lack of support for the lesser players on Tour mainly focusing on the main ones and increasing profit. Tough time for tennis.
